Just an idea I had earlier.
When a player signs up for the game, they create an account, instead of creating a new character. When they connect to the MUD, they log into their account, not their character. When they log in, they are brought to the account management screen. From there, they can log into the game as one of the characters tied to the account, create a new character, delete a character, change their account password, or log out.
This means that, among other things, punishments spread across all of a players characters, instead of punishing one character only to have them create a new one immediately.
It also discourages multiplaying, since only one character per account can log in at the same time.
